Water has long been used as a source of energy, beginning with the Greeks use of water wheels over 2,000 years ago. For over a century, hydropower has been used to generate electricity from falling water. Hydroelectric power stems from the process of using water’s energy as it flows from higher to lower elevation, rotating hydraulic turbines to create electricity. Tidal power, although not widely used, can also generate hydroelectricity by utilizing the same principle.
Potential energy can be thought of as energy stored within a physical system. It is called potential energy because it has the potential to be converted into other forms of energy, such as kinetic energy, and to do work in the process. The standard (SI) unit of measure for potential energy is the joule, the same as for work, or energy in general.
The most common type of hydroelectric power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir. Water released from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity. But hydroelectric power doesn’t necessarily require a large dam. Some hydroelectric power plants just use a small canal to channel the river water through a turbine.
